If a keyword shows a high search volume, but there are relatively few relevant results, YouTube Search Insights will call it out as a content gap—a prime opportunity to supply your audience with content they’re not getting enough of.
Data in Search Insights is based on what users have searched for in the last 28 days. You can create a whole content strategy around targeting keywords that have content gaps.
How to Access YouTube Search Insights?
Search Insights is located within the Research tab in YouTube Studio on the desktop. You can access it by logging into YouTube Studio and clicking on Analytics in the left-hand navigation menu. Navigate to the ‘Research’ tab from there.
Under research, you’ll find 3 different tabs which can be used to access Search Insights data:
- Searches across YouTube
- Your viewer’s searches
- Saved

How to generate keyword ideas using this?
It is very easy to use and generates keyword ideas quickly. All you need to do is type in a keyword into the search bar and click on the ‘Search’ button.
Once you type in your query, it shows you a variety of related searches. Once you hit Enter or select an option, it’ll show you all search queries related to your base query. It’ll also show you the search volume for each of the related queries.
This is very helpful for content planning and deciding which keywords are worth targeting. You can also use the data to determine if there is any potential for creating content around a keyword that has a lot of search volume but very few relevant results.
Find content gaps
Youtube Search Insights is an invaluable tool for content creators, providing a wealth of data that can be used to create engaging content tailored to the interests of YouTube viewers. It also helps you uncover content gaps and identify the keywords that have the greatest potential for driving engagement.
Simply click on ‘All searches’ and select ‘Content gaps only.’

This tool is currently available for limited languages and demographics. Currently, it can only provide search queries from the US, Canada, India, the UK, and Australia.

The tool also offers to compare the search trends for keywords with Google Trends, you can get a better understanding of how a keyword’s popularity has changed over time and adapt your content plan.
All you need to do is click on the three dots adjacent to the search volume for a given keyword, and it’ll take you to Google Trends, where you can view and compare search trends for various keywords.

Your Viewer’s Searches
By accessing this tab, you can get data about what your audience is searching for. It provides you with a list of top keywords being searched for by your viewers and viewers similar to yours. It will also display the search volume for keywords (low, medium, or high) and the number of views your channel received from searches for those keywords in the past 28 days. You can look up search data for both general topics and for specific keywords. You can also filter the results to see content gaps only if that’s what your primary goal is.
Saved Searches
You can save searches and track the performance of specific keywords. You can also review search metrics over time to gain insight into which keywords are recording the changes over time, you can track the progress of your content and optimize it based on viewers’ interests.
